Wood ants (Formica fusca), also called heathland ants, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Ants are social insects that form large colonies. Wood ants are often slave ants for the blood-red ant (Fusca sanguinea), working for a blood-red queen ant after she has invaded their nest. Ants will generally eat whatever they can find.
