Light micrograph of thymol crystals. Thymol is found in oil of thyme and extracted as a white crystalline substance of a pleasant, aromatic but pungent odour with strong antiseptic properties. It is an effective fungicide killing fungal spores. It has also been used for the treatment of ringworm (tinea). It is an anthelmintic killing nematode worms and is sometimes the antiseptic ingredient used in mouthwash. Thymol is the antiseptic ingredient in the toothpaste known as Euthymol. Magnification x100 at 10cm wide.
