Star cactus (Astrophytum ornatum)
Ref: star7Description:
Star cactus (Astrophytum ornatum). Sometimes known as ‘Monk’s Hood’ or ‘Bishop’s Cap’ this unusual cactus originates from Mexico. This specimen has 8 sections or ribs but this can vary depending on the species. It is mostly tolerant of a little frost although it is prudent to keep it under cover during cold spells. It thrives in full sun but will accept light shade. Moderate watering is necessary during the summer but it does need to lie dormant with no watering for a couple of months during winter. After 5 or 6 years it will produce a large pretty flower usually of pale yellow, from its apex. It can reach heights of over a metre.
