Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of spangle galls on the underside of a leaf from the English oak (Quercus robur) tree. The gall is caused by the wasp Neuroterus quercusbaccarum which lays its eggs in the oak leaves. One leaf can have up to 100 of these galls, each containing a single developing larvae. Magnification: x26 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
