Small Copper Butterfly (Lycaena phlaeas) This diminutive butterfly of just an inch or so wingspan (25mm-30mm), inhabits dry fields and heaths visiting flowers. The flower in this image is a veldt daisy or Osteospermum. This butterfly is quick and darting and is often seen chasing off other butterflies. It is found in Europe up to heights of 2,000 metres and also in Africa, Asia and North America. The first flight of this little butterfly, is usually in April-May, the second July-August and there is sometimes a third flight in warmer climates.
