Nigella seeds, also known as black onion seeds and black cumin, come from the Nigella sativa plant. The seeds resemble those of onions but Nigella sativa is actually a member of the buttercup family. The seeds are used for their strong bitter tasting flavour in sweets, alcoholic beverages and as whole seeds on bread.
