Marjoram root hairs (Origanum vulgare)
Ref: 00135cDescription:
Root hairs. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a root of marjoram, Origanum vulgare. The root is covered in numerous tiny, water-absorbing root hairs. Root hairs form an intimate contact with the soil particles and enormously increase the root's absorbing surface area. Marjoram is a herbaceous plant used as a culinary herb, and its flowers contain medicinal properties. The plant grows wild throughout most of Europe. Magnification: x100 at 6x4.5cm size.
