Jacobs ladder pollen (Polemonium caeruleum)
Ref: 80015746Description:
Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of pollen grains from the Jacob's ladder plant (Polemonium caeruleum). Pollen grains vary between species in size, shape and surface texture. They are produced in the anthers of the flower and contain the male gametes required for reproduction. Dispersal by the wind carries the grains to other plants, resulting in the fertilisation of the female eggs present in the flower's carpel. Jacob's ladder is a hardy perennial found in the northern hemisphere. Magnification: x1060 at 6x7cm size.
