Common shore crab (Carcinus maenus)
Ref: 14630fDescription:
Common shore crab. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a juvenile common shore crab, Carcinus maenus. The common shore crab is related to swimming crabs (family: Portunidae). Commonly found in rocky areas on the shore, it lacks flattened paddles on its fifth (hind) pair of walking legs, and consequently it is only a moderate swimmer. The hind legs are in fact pointed for gripping on to rocks. Powerful pincers are seen on its forelimbs. Magnification: x4.5 at 6x7cm size.
