Cocoa Mort Bleu Butterfly (Caligo teucer) This is a macro image of one of the “owl” species of butterflies which are known for their large owl-like eyespots on the undersides of their hindwings. The uppersides of their wings are less ornate with shades of brown and a yellowish band to the forewing and shots of a bluish iridescence to the hindwing. It is found in central America and feeds on the juices of rotting bananas and other fruit. The eyespots are believed to confuse a prospective predator.
