Clove flower petal. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a cross-section through a clove flower petal. Cloves are the aromatic dried flower buds of the tropical tree Syzygium aromaticum (Eugenia caryophyllata). Whole and powdered cloves are used in baking and cooking whilst an aromatic oil extracted from the clove is used in baking, confections and some medicines as a flavouring. It is also used as a dental analgesic. Magnification: x220 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
