Caraway seed. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a cross section through a dried caraway (Carum carvi) seed. The cross section shows how the seed, known as a schizocarp, is divided into two mericarps. Caraway has an aroma and taste similar to anise. It is used as a spice in cooking and as a flavouring for cheeses and breads. Caraway belongs to the apiaceae family of plants which includes carrot, celery, parsnip, dill and many other important food crops. Magnification: x32 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
